A Big Wallet Can Mean Big Problems

Do you keep your wallet in your back pocket? Many men do. Sitting with a wallet in your back pocket can cause one hip to sit higher and create a tilt of your pelvis. This is the equivalent of having a wedge placed under one side of your pelvis while you're seated. This may occur for hours while you're at work or during your commute to and from work.

The pelvis and hips are the very foundation of the spine. These sort of changes to their positioning causes changes to everything that sits on top of that foundation. Consequently, you sit lopsided and round your back, which puts more stress on the spine. The wallet can even cause you to slouch with slumped shoulders, possibly leading to back, neck, and shoulder pain. Plus, the bigger your wallet, the more emphasized the lopsidedness will be.

Another issue of sitting on your wallet is that the sciatic nerve gets pinched between your wallet and your hip. Even after a short time, the sciatic nerve can become irritated causing discomfort such as numbness, tingling, or pain. Over time, the stress on the lower back and agitation of the sciatic nerve can lead to degeneration and cause pain in the lower back that can run all the way down your leg.

If you're experiencing any of these systems, it might be time to visit a chiropractor. In the meantime, how about switching your wallet to a front pocket, or remove it from your back pocket before you sit down or get in your car?
